HARVEST AND PROCESSES

After cultivation, there’s HARVESTING. Harvesting is a very delicate process, when not done right, it SPOILS the vegetal. It’s a matter of PICKING it at exactly the right time for the smell to be at its best. And picking it with the right, precise, method, to preserve the flower. Harvesting also implies a lot of MANUAL, TEDIOUS, often back-breaking work. LMR works with farmers to develop new harvesting machines to facilitate the process by accelerating the harvest, LMR increases the QUALITY of the product which comes fresher from the extraction, and increases the product availability. IFF is the only fragrance and ingredient company covering such a large scope including vegetal selection agricultural practices, harvesting, mechanization and development of extractions processes.

IFF-LMR NATURALS: THE BEST VARIETY FOR THE BEST SCENT

For many years, LMR has been working closely with farmers to develop new harvesting processes. The purpose of mechanization is the sustainability of our natural ingredients portfolio. Indeed, harvesting mechanization helps the farmers ensure both the quality of the products harvested and a high productivity level. Mechanization also enhances the working conditions by reducing the arduousness of the collection work, and sometime compensates the lack of labour.

The LMR R&D team has worked closely with farmers for key ingredients of the portfolio, to jointly develop mechanization solutions. For instance, the lack of manual harvesters for narcisse in Lozère, France, was endangering the sustainability of the ingredient for perfumers. The LMR R&D team developed a harvesting machine, which multiplied harvesting speed by 30, making the resource available again for perfumers, while optimizing the process by bringing fresher flowers to the LMR extraction plant. In Trets, France, the LMR R&D team worked closely with orris farmers to improve existing harvesting tools, to achieve a better crop quality, at a lower cost.

Our sustainability process also involves entering into long-term contracts with our farmers. The length of these contracts coincides with the growth cycle of a particular crop. In these contracts, IFF-LMR commits to a guaranteed price, ensuring the farmer a steady income, despite fluctuations in crop yields and market prices. It therefore allows IFF-LMR partners, the farmers, to invest in mechanization, which was the case for blackcurrant buds.

LMR is always looking for opportunities to improve its harvesting process, and our R&D team is currently actively working on developing new tools to optimize the harvest of other strategic ingredients within our portfolio.
